This project is driven by the desire to imagine public space before thinking about “educational” space. The piazza, the path and the public functions connected with educational facilities are the subject of an operation of “urban restitching” in a periphery – where the city is not yet city, and the countryside no longer countryside – whose identity could be represented by a new space of attraction.
The culture of public space becomes the innovative element of education focused on social as well as cultural growth.
A public spaces connects the reconverted existing building to the new building, emphasising the concept of urban regeneration. A long diagonal cut defines the elevations of the school, the site of an urban and territorial narrative that culminates in a piazza, the space of aggregation par excellence. The introspective nature best suited to most educational spaces contrasts with the elements of visual and functional connection at the urban scale that bind together the territory and the city. The design of the interiors privileges interpersonal relations. Large entry atriums serve as plazas hosting relations between different flows;
circulation spaces are not conceived solely to provide access to classrooms, but as places of encounter and relations with green patios, from which they draw air, light and the colours of nature.
