The project for the new school in the San Rocco neighborhood was born from the administration’s desire to create a building that is not only a place of learning but a true community space. It aims to combine architectural quality, sustainability, and social openness, contributing to the urban regeneration of the neighborhood. The school is a compact, regular volume, situated in the northeast corner of the lot to free up a large entrance area on Via Roma. This space becomes a new, welcoming, and permeable green plaza, enriched with parking areas for bicycles and cars that are designed to be used even outside of school hours. Surrounding it, a sequence of open and semi-open spaces intertwines with existing vegetation, particularly highlighting the green strip along the Esino river. This creates a natural dialogue between the landscape and the building, benefiting not only the students but the entire community. Inside, the architecture interprets the idea of a contemporary school through an innovative organization of spaces. Classrooms are grouped into didactic clusters, which are autonomous units with shared common areas and flexible laboratories. These spaces can be transformed according to needs, from traditional lectures and group work to activities open to the neighborhood, such as evening classes or cultural initiatives. The cafeteria and gymnasium also become shared resources, thanks to independent entrances, reinforcing the school’s role as a hub for the neighborhood’s social life. The project is guided by the principles of design for all, which ensures universal accessibility, and a strong focus on environmental quality, both indoors and outdoors. Sustainability is pursued through reducing resource needs and choosing local materials like brick curtain walls, which echo the area’s building tradition and ensure a low environmental impact throughout the building’s entire life cycle.
