Sharing, permeability, functional mixité and social contamination are the essential conditions of true urban requalification. This is equally true in a setting characterised by the presence of historical elements, typical of the tradition of Milanese apartment blocks and the brownfields of the city’s Sesto neighbourhood. Milan and its industrial past are the starting point of the design, coupled with suggestions dictated by materials and green spaces surrounding the site. This renewed urban and landscape setting, suggested by the master plan and the distinctive chiaroscuro atmospheres of abandoned industrial facilities, were used to develop an idea of dwelling that links tradition with a contemporary language, developing visual and physical connections between spaces and functions.
Overcoming the common concept of the home and aiming toward an effective integration between landscaping, common areas and housing, this project creates a true sense of shared social life,
where green space is not only ornamental, but also a tool that fosters communications and aggregation. Shared spaces are not only interstitial connections, but also places for social interaction and intergenerational exchange.
