The “Fabbrica del Carnevale” museum activates a strategy for the sustainable urban development of the Town of Fano. Based on the technical and economic feasibility study developed by Italo Rota, the project animates a space of experimentation and contamination, transforming abandoned parts of the monumental Sant’Arcangelo complex into a new living “organism” open to the city and its inhabitants.
A “generator” of innovative services and functions linked to the cultural legacy of the Carnival, approached as a creative experience and occasion for inverting social and behavioural canons. This theme is at the core of the new functions of the complex, which will host the museum of the city of the carnival, in the form of dynamic exhibition spaces and a creative laboratory, where the community of artists can design and develop the themes and sculptures of their allegorical floats.
The museum winds along a continuous path, on three levels, wrapping around a void central cube: animated by glowing panels and suspended sculptures, it is the fulcrum of the entire exhibition. The exhibition exits through the Bio-Building Machine, an active bioclimatic greenhouse featuring a suspended structure, wrapped by the stair and hosting hydroponic cultivations of edible vegetation, illuminated by a three-dimensional dichroic window that recalls the costume of the Harlequin. The complex will also feature a small hub dedicated to sustainable mobility, a cafeteria, as well as a jazz academy and club: the “House of Music”.
Inside the Fabbrica del Carnevale five artistic installations will dominate the scene. Designed by Italo Rota, they are organically linked to the architecture of the new museum. In the internal garden, a perimeter path provides access to a cafeteria and the House of Music. The central part of the courtyard resembles a cavea that links up with the half basement of the Fabbrica del Carnevale, providing direct access to the creative laboratory and bringing in natural light.
