The site is situated between the historical centre of Matelica and the Regina Pacis quarter in close proximity to the public gardens, and in a central position,
with respect to the form of the city.
Given its central position, the building was imagined as a new piece of the city, integrated but also distinguishable: a point of identity and inclusion for the community and the territory, augmented by the introduction of activities not directly linked to education. The parti is based on a system of
ten volumes of different dimensions on two levels, configured to integrate the existing building within the new volume. Each volume is characterised on the roof by skylights, open elements, and the typical form of “chimneys”. In addition to recalling the roofs of the surrounding fabric they also make for a highly recognisable building.
Distinctive roof geometries form an articulated system of different heights, forms and functions. Each volume is characterised on the roof by skylights, open elements, and the typical form of “chimneys”. In addition to recalling the roofs of the surrounding fabric they also make for a highly recognisable building. Zenithal illumination and warm tones wrapping the common areas exalt the
gradients of light. The south-facing classrooms are protected against excessive solar glare on the ground floor by the park’s vegetation, and on the first floor by the projection of the volumes above.
The gym is covered by a shed roof that introduces diffuse internal lighting and dialogues with the factory building in the east of the lot. Brick façades link the complex to local tradition and integrate a contemporary language with a historical legacy.
Concentrated in the portion of the lot along Via Spontini, the project leaves room for the rich crown of vegetation that wraps the building to the south and west, bringing nature inside in the form of a system of patios and courts. Outdoor spaces are imagined as an educational park where students can have direct interaction with different species and their lifecycle.
