The project for the new school complex in the municipality of Rosciano (PE) was conceived with the ambition of creating not only a place dedicated to learning, but also a true civic space – open, inclusive, and capable of fostering social, cultural, and community relationships. The school is imagined as a collective asset, a point of reference that belongs first to its students but, at the same time, to the entire city.
The intervention is located in the void left by a former quarry, taking advantage of the natural concave shape of the terrain to accommodate the building without obstructing two precious horizons: the Majella mountain range and the Adriatic Sea. Here, architecture is shaped by the landscape: it collects its memory and returns it transformed, as a presence that does not impose itself, but enters into dialogue.
The main volume develops as a continuous line that folds upon itself, following the slope and then rising towards the urban center. This architectural gesture transforms the school into a recognizable landmark, a sign of identity and a symbol of positive values. The building volumes, extruded and staggered, ideally reconstruct the original profile of the hill, enclosing at their heart a deep courtyard – the vibrant core of the complex – where interior and exterior spaces meet and interact.
Materials and colors draw inspiration from earthy tones and the natural hues of the surrounding landscape, while green roofs follow the topography of the terrain, reinforcing the bond with the environment. The architecture thus acquires a harmonious character, balancing the solidity of the structure with the delicacy of its setting. Generous pedestrian squares and outdoor spaces connect the school to its most representative functions – cafeteria, laboratories, and auditorium – creating places for encounter and exchange. These are not mere passages, but true relational spaces that strengthen the public dimension of the project, making the complex a vital point of reference even beyond school hours. Thanks to a system of differentiated access points, the school opens itself to the community and becomes a multifunctional organism, alive throughout the day and across the week. It is a building that educates not only those who inhabit it, but also the city around it: a civic, inclusive, and dynamic presence that unites landscape, architecture, and community into a shared narrative.
